Kola, the son of the late Chief MKO Abiola, the assumed victor of Nigeria’s presidential election on June 12, 1993, has declared his intention to run for president in 2023 on the Peoples Redemption Party platform (PRP).
Recall that in April, Kola Abiola joined the Peoples Redemption Party. Abiola was formally accepted into the party on at its national secretariat, Abuja, by the national chairman of the party, Falalu Bello.
Kola’s nomination and expression of interest forms were submitted to the party’s office in Abuja yesterday.
Kola told reporters that the country’s current issues could be overcome if the country had competent leadership that was accountable to the people.
“We will all come together and work for the party,” he assured whoever won his party’s primary election.
Meanwhile, Babatunde Ali, the PRP’s National Secretary, claimed the party was ready for the general elections.
Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola GCFR, also known as M. K. O. Abiola was a Nigerian businessman, publisher, and politician. He was the Aare Ona Kankafo XIV of Yorubaland and an aristocrat of the Egba clan.
M.K.O. Abiola ran for the presidency in 1993, for which the election results were annulled by the preceding military president Ibrahim Babangida because of allegations that they were corrupt and unfair. Abiola was awarded the GCFR posthumously on June 6, 2018 by President Muhammadu Buhari and Nigeria’s democracy day was changed to June 12.
Abiola’s support in the June 1993 presidential election cut across geo-political zones and religious divisions, among a few politicians to accomplish such a spread during his time. By the time of his death, he had become an unexpected symbol of democracy.
