NCC Plans to Unveil Strategic Plan for Telecom Sector

Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has announced plans to unveil a strategic plan for the Commission and the telecommunications sector by the end of January 2024. The announcement was made during a courtesy visit by the executives of the Nigeria Information Technology Reporters’ Association, Abuja Chapter.

Dr. Maida assured Nigerians of improved quality of service by telecom operators and solutions to challenges related to Right of Way (ROW) for operators. He emphasised the need to change the narrative around ROW, moving away from focusing solely on charges to opening up and allowing infrastructure to address the issue.

The EVC also discussed the importance of linking Subscriber Identification Modules (SIM) to the National Identity Number (NIN) policy, highlighting its potential to enhance and secure digital services in the country’s telecom industry. He emphasised the need to tie everyone to an identity, providing a foundation for building various digital services and enhancing security.

Dr. Maida called for collaboration with the media for the seamless development of the telecom sector. He expressed gratitude for the support from the President and Minister of Communications and Digital Economy and outlined the guiding principles of the NCC in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda and the Strategic Roadmap set by the Minister.

He mentioned that the NCC’s Strategic Plan, to be released at the end of January, will align with the Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasising transparency in addressing challenges faced by the telecom industry.

The executives of the Nigeria Information Technology Reporters’ Association commended Dr. Maida for his proactive approach since assuming office, expressing confidence in his capacity to drive the institution to greater heights.

Executives from NCC, including Adeleke Adewolu (Executive Commissioner, Stakeholders Engagement), Ubale Maska (Commissioner, Consumer Affairs), and Dr. Reuben Muoka (Director of Public Affairs), also appreciated the media’s contribution to the development of the telecoms sector.
