The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has stated its commitment to implementing policies that prioritise the well-being of individuals living with disabilities in Nigeria, the Agency shared on Thursday.
Director General of the emergency responders Mustapha Habib Ahmed, affirmed that the agency will ensure the inclusion of persons with disabilities in emergency response efforts to disasters.
The Director General made these remarks during a meeting with Dr. James David Lalu, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), held at the NEMA headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.
The NEMA boss disclosed the existence of the Vulnerable Care Unit, established by the Agency to address the needs of individuals with special needs, including those living with disabilities.
Dr. James David Lalu, seeking collaboration for disability inclusiveness in disaster management, proposed the development of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between NEMA and NCPWD.
The aim, according to him, is to enhance the integration of disability considerations in Disaster Risk Reduction and provide capacity building for vulnerable care officers in emergency management.
