The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Nasarawa State successfully thwarted an attack on its state command headquarters in Lafia by suspected bandits.
Reports indicated that gunmen launched an assault on the NSCDC headquarters in Lafia early on Monday morning, firing shots indiscriminately to intimidate the public.
Jerry Victor, the NSCDC State Public Relations Officer, confirmed that an unspecified number of armed individuals suspected to be bandits attempted to breach the command’s perimeter fence to gain entry into the facility. The assailants, armed with guns and iron rods, made concerted efforts to break through the fence while others positioned themselves strategically around the building.
“The operatives of the NSCDC swiftly responded by opening fire on the hoodlums whose mission was to release some high-profile suspected criminals including informants of kidnappers in the custody of the command”.
The NSCDC spokesperson confirmed that no casualties occurred during the exchange of gunfire between the attackers and the command’s operatives, reassuring the public that peace has been restored.
Jerry Victor added that the command has detained five notorious suspects involved in various crimes, including two individuals suspected of aiding kidnappers who recently killed the 82-year-old father of a former state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Daniel Umaru Lagi, despite ransom payment.
There has been a surge in kidnapping incidents in Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State, prompting local authorities to impose a curfew and restrict the movement of motorcycles and tricycles between 8:00 PM and 6:00 AM.
