The Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) has conducted a number of raids against unlawful street vendors in Ibadan, the state capital.
The operation, which was headed by the agency’s chairman, Adekoya Adesagba, took place over a day and targeted the Oritamerin, Gege, Agbeni, and Ogunpa neighbourhoods of the city of Ibadan, according to a statement released Monday by Dotun Oyelade, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation in Ibadan.
Accompanied by Ayoade Adekola, the agency’s general manager, Adesagba clarified that the action was intended to address the region’s problems with obstructed roads and delayed traffic control.
He claimed that the places had been turned into impromptu marketplaces, which had resulted in extreme traffic jams and pollution of the surrounding area.
The operations, according to Adesagba, “violate environmental laws, contributing to indiscriminate waste disposal and drainage systems, thereby worsening flooding in parts of the city.”
“Their market stalls and imposing fines on those caught,” the chairman said, expressing dismay at the marketers’ disregard for government standards.
Additionally, 12 people were caught running an illegal motor park in the market, and the culprits were fined.
He cautioned marketers from selling on the roadways, stating that the government’s efforts are focused on preserving their property and making sure they are safe.
“The enforcement operation of the OYRTMA is a component of the state government’s larger endeavours to enhance road safety and decrease accidents.
“The actions of this government have significantly decreased the number of accidents and improved road safety for both drivers and marketers.
“OYRTMA has received praise for its efforts to create a favourable business and transportation climate in the state,” he added.
