The Soil Science Society of Nigeria (SSSN) has announced a partnership with the Nigerian government aimed at advancing soil science practices across the country to enhance agricultural productivity and reduce crop losses.
Speaking at a press briefing on Monday in Kano ahead of the society’s 49th Annual General Conference, the association’s president, Professor Jibril Mohammad, emphasised the importance of research-driven initiatives to improve soil health.
Professor Mohammad, who also serves as Director of the Centre for Dryland Agriculture, noted that the collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security would centre on research and dissemination of key findings on soil usage and fertiliser application.

“The collaboration is geared towards improving agricultural productivity and sustainability,” he stated.
The upcoming conference, themed “Promoting Soil Health and Resilience Through Research and Innovation for Sustainable Development,” seeks to explore modern techniques and scientific innovations to ensure long-term food security in Nigeria.
Professor Mohammad explained that the event would help chart practical pathways for sustainable agricultural development, with a strong focus on effective soil management.
Scheduled to take place at Bayero University, Kano, from April 8 to 11, the conference will include sessions on land resource assessment and management, soil health and nutrient management, soil physics and conservation, capacity building, extension, and emerging trends in soil science research.
