Nigeria, Plateau Government Reaffirm Commitment to Livestock Sector Reform

The Federal Government of Nigeria and the Plateau State government have restated their commitment to enhancing the livestock sector to achieve food and nutrition security.

During a visit by Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau to the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, in Abuja, both officials highlighted the importance of collaboration to improve agricultural production and livestock reform.

Minister Kyari discussed the forthcoming livestock reform initiative spearheaded by President Bola Tinubu, aimed at repositioning the sector. This initiative seeks to address challenges such as conflicts between farmers and herders and harness the untapped potential within the livestock value chain.

He elaborated on the need for collaboration with state governments and other stakeholders to address food insecurity, exacerbated by insecurity and climate change-induced challenges such as flooding.

In response, Governor Mutfwang expressed readiness to collaborate with the ministry to ensure food security, particularly on the importance of developing the full value chain of Irish potato production in Plateau. He underscored the significance of rural development and livestock production for the state’s growth.
