Nigeria’s Transmission Company has announced the temporary shutdown of the Egbin Power Station for maintenance on the linking gas pipeline supplied by the Nigeria Gas Company. This maintenance operation is expected to result in a decrease of 676 megawatts (MW) of electricity on the national power grid. Nigeria’s grid typically delivers between 3,500 to 4,500 MW daily.
In an official notice posted on its X handle, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) stated, “This is to notify the public that as of 11:13 hours on December 18, 2023, Egbin Power generating station was shut down to allow the Nigeria Gas Company to maintain the linking gas pipeline supplying gas to Egbin Power Station.
“The station will be shut down for three days from today.
“This means a reduction of 676MW of bulk power generated into the nation’s grid for three days and consequently the quantum of bulk power available to be delivered to distribution companies’ load centers nationwide for the period.”
Industry operators anticipate that this situation will result in blackouts in various parts of the country during the maintenance period.
