The House of Representatives has issued a three-week ultimatum to the Committee on Power to investigate and provide a report on the frequent national grid collapses.
The decision was made after Hon. Mansur Manu Soro (Bauchi, PDP) raised a motion of urgent national importance during the plenary session.
Soro, in his motion, showed concern over the frequent power grid failures that have caused nationwide blackouts, exacerbating the economic challenges of Nigerians.
He underscored the importance of having a stable power supply in the country, stating that it is crucial for driving economic growth and development in any nation.
He expressed dissatisfaction at the alarming rate at which the national grid collapsed in 2024 alone, revealing that it had collapsed eight times.
He urged the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to restore power in the North West and North East region, stating that those areas have been in darkness due to the ongoing power sector crisis.
He mentioned the disturbing fact that the grid collapses frequently despite the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu’s assurance on improved electricity supply—one that led to the government’s approval of increased electricity tariffs for customers on Band A.
