Regional security outfit in Nigeria’s South West, the Amotekun Corps have foiled a kidnap attempt on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Friday.
The Amotekun Commandant of Oyo State, Col. Olayinka Olayanju (retd.) explained that some security agents who were coming from Lagos towards Ibadan were said to have run into the scene and engaged the kidnappers in a gun battle and eventually gave them a chase, after foiling the attempt.
He said, “The kidnap attempt occurred at Imolisa village and which is within the territory of Ogun State although it is not far from Dominion University which is located within Oyo State.
“I was told that the security agents had travelled to Lagos Airport to pick up their boss and were returning when they ran into the incident.
“They were said to have exchanged fire with the criminals but eventually repelled them and chased them away before they could whisk away their targets.”
A police officer who spoke on condition of anonymity said if such indeed happened, the police in the state would have been informed.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Oyo State, Adewale Osifeso is yet to comment on the incident.
Reports indicated that an unspecified number of travellers were kidnapped by armed men on Friday.
Eyewitnesses claimed that they saw vehicles abandoned on the road with their doors opened.
They claimed what happened must have been a case of kidnap, seeing as people left their vehicles and fled in all direction, to safety.
Following the recent security advisory by foreign condulates in Nigeria, security agencies have doubled up on joint patrol of immigration, army, Amotekun, Police and other security operatives in the South West.
