The Nigerian Peace Corps Establishment Bill, previously endorsed by the House of Representatives on February 29, 2024, and forwarded to the Senate for concurrence, underwent its first reading on the Senate floor and successfully passed through the initial stage.
Following this progress, Senate majority leader Senator Micheal Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti Central) is set to introduce a motion for concurrence shortly, aligning the Senate’s actions with the existing regulations of the National Assembly.
It’s worth noting that the bill underwent a comprehensive review during deliberations in the Ninth National Assembly.
The Peace Corps of Nigeria, founded over 25 years ago by National Commandant Dr. Dickson Akoh, operates within the legal framework of Nigeria under the Company and Allied Matters Act (CAMA). It has received recognition from the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Federal Ministry of Youth Development and holds a licence as a non-governmental organisation from the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, enabling it to function nationwide.
In addition to the Peace Corps Bill, the Senate also initiated the first reading of several other bills, including the Nigerian Hunters and Security Service Bill 2024, the Legislative Houses (Powers & Privileges) Act (Amendment) Bill 2024, and the National Talent Rehabilitation and Integration Agency (Establishment) Bill 2024.
Furthermore, bills such as the Agricultural Research Council Act (Amendment) Bill 2024 and the Agricultural Harvest and Processing Zone (Establishment) Bill 2024 were also introduced during this legislative session.
