The Nigerian Government allocated ₦8.73bn in 2024 to improve power infrastructure at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, ensuring consistent electricity at its new international terminal.
A report from BudgIT’s transparency platform, GovSpend, revealed major payments to J. Marine Logistics Ltd for outsourced power supply. These included ₦5.67bn for services from March to September 2023, ₦2.19bn in May 2024 for October to December 2023, and an additional ₦874.42m on the same day.
The airport has long faced electricity challenges, leading to disruptions in airfield lighting, baggage handling, and security operations. Aviation expert Olumide Odunayo praised the government’s efforts but called for a shift to renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind, to reduce costs and ensure sustainability.
Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo echoed this sentiment, announcing plans to adopt solar power systems across airports, aiming to cut operational costs by 30% while aligning with global eco-friendly practices.
The 2025 budget allocates ₦105.95bn to aviation, including ₦5bn for power upgrades in Lagos and Abuja airports, alongside other infrastructure improvements.
