The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) says it will build overhead platforms at 11 Railway crossings in Lagos.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) NRC’s managing director Fidet Okhiria stated that the organisation has started separating road from train in the Lagos neighborhoods of Oyingbo and Ebute-Metta.

A Lagos staff bus was crushed by a speeding train a few days ago when it swerved onto a rail track. Six people died as a result of the train-bus collision, which involved 102 people.

In response to the incident, Okhiria stated that the NRC would hire people to prevent cars from driving through level crossings while trains are in motion.

He added that the company would use technology to notify drivers whenever trains approached level crossings.

“We are going to have 11 flyovers within Lagos and we cannot do all at the same time. We are constructing them in batches,” Okhiria said.

“Before now, we constructed barriers and they were vandalised. We even constructed automatic barriers which were also vandalised.

“Although we have been repairing them, especially the automatic barriers, they do not last for a week after such repairs.

“It is either they hit the barriers with vehicles or people vandalise them overnight.”
