President Muhammadu Buhari has said Nigeria will support the Burundi Republic in any way that is required in the spirit of African solidarity and brotherhood. He also promises to have the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited look into the country’s request for energy aid.

The president made this statement on Tuesday at the State House in Abuja while greeting President Evariste Ndayishimiye’s special envoy, who had come with a message.

Audace Niyonzima, the Burundian minister of finance, budget, and economic planning, also spoke during the visit and sent his president’s best wishes to Nigerians and President Buhari for the upcoming general election, which is set to take place in February and March of this year.

According to the minister, “We pray that the polls would be peaceful and successful, so that Nigeria would maintain her reputation as a bastion of peace and stability,” the special envoy said.

President Buhari responded to the Burundian leader’s appeal for assistance in the field of energy provision, particularly petrol, by saying that he understood how it felt for a nation to experience an energy scarcity and that he would have the NNPC look into the matter.

Given that he had served the two terms in office required by the constitution, President Buhari stated he was looking forward to the elections and retiring.
