The Nigerian Government has announced plans to pay Nigerians to acquire skills from technical and vocational schools.
According to Minister of Education Tunji Alausa, the initiative aims to diversify the economy and tackle the lack of vocational skills in the country.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, Alausa highlighted the value of skilled trades.
“You go to the UK or US today, a plumber earns more than a doctor. If an electrician in England earns more than a doctor, what are we talking about here?” he asked.
The government has developed a four-step approach to revitalise technical and vocational education.
“We will pay students to attend these schools. We have modelled the cost, and once the programme is rolled out, we will announce the details,” he said.
