President Bola Tinubu has allocated N100 billion to Nigeria’s school feeding programmes for 2024.
This was made known by the ECOWAS chairman on Monday during the signing of the 2024 Budget into law at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Nigeria.
According to the president, the funding of the school feeding programme will serve as a stimulant for student attendance and also downsize the out-of-school-children problem.
“One of the priority areas of the bill we just passed is the N100 billion provision for the feeding of school children. I believe that is a stimulant that will encourage school enrolment and also address malnutrition among school children.
“I will be meeting with local government at sub-national levels so that we can collaborate and jointly implement an all-inclusive programme,” President Tinubu said.
Aside from the school feeding programme, he also confirmed that the budget, christened “Renewed Hope”, is focused on increasing capital expenditure and reducing the recurrent expenditure.
School Feeding Programme in Nigeria
Tinubu had reintroduced the school feeding program and ordered its transfer from the Humanitarian Ministry to the Education Ministry and to reintroduce it.
The program, which was stopped under former President Muhammadu Buhari, will now be overseen by the Education Ministry and will aim to provide students with nutritious food and also encourage school attendance and improve learning.
