Nigeria, U.K Sign Deal on Immigration Offenders

The United Kingdom has announced a major deal to speed up deportations of foreign criminals and illegal migrants to Nigeria.

Home Secretary Priti Patel said the “landmark agreement with Nigeria will increase the deportation of dangerous foreign criminals”.

The Home Secretary’s agreement will see offenders receive new travel documents within five working days.

The announcement on Thursday came hours after the U.K deported at least 10 Nigerians on a Home Office flight yesterday for alleged immigration-related offences.

The deportees were seen through security at Lagos airport before being taken away to a facility and were not allowed contact with the public or journalists at the airport.

In June, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) cancelled the first flight due to take asylum seekers from the U.K to Rwanda.

The flight was part of the Rwanda asylum plan, announced by the U.K government in April, that sees some asylum seekers given a one-way ticket to Rwanda to claim asylum there instead.
