Nigeria’s President , Muhammadu Buhari wants the country’s ports cleared of all medical imports and has to this effect, granted a blanket waiver on all medical supplies entering the country.
The Special Assistant to the President on Digital and New Media, Tolu Ogunlesi, via his twitter handle, explained that with the import waiver, Buhari had also directed the Nigerian Customs Service to implement expedited clearing of all imported healthcare equipment, medical and pharmaceutical supplies at the ports.
These include all imported healthcare equipment, medical and pharmaceutical supplies.
The New Media aide adds that the presidential waiver on import duties for medical equipment and supplies, and directive for expedited clearing, took effect from May 1, 2020.
While this move will considerably impact the country’s revenues, it is hoped that it will also assist in the fight against COVID-19. Medical supplies have been in short supply particularly in hot spots like Lagos and Abuja.
