Nigeria: Water Scarcity In Kano Cripples Socio-Economic Activities

The persistent water scarcity which has defied all efforts and solutions in Kano and its environs has continued to take its toll on residents.

According to reports, the water scarcity has made water vendors hike their prices. A 25-litre jerrycan reportedly goes for N150 and N200 from the previous price of N50 and N70.

Some areas in Kano affected by the scarcity include Dala, Fagge, Gwale, Kano Municipal, Kumbotso, Tarauni, Nassarawa and Ungogo. Their residents depend on supply from the State Water Board and designated boreholes built by philanthropists and the government.

Regarding the issue, Ali Makoda, the state Commissioner for Water Resources said the State Government is working tirelessly to make water available in the eight metropolitan local governments.

“We are working tirelessly to fix the prevailing water scarcity in the state capital and its environs, and in a couple of days, the problem will be over,” he had assured.
Makoda also the challenge is caused by obsolete equipment at the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant, which supplies water within the Kano metropolis and its environs.
