Nigerian Actors Take the Spotlight in Disney's 'Mufasa' Cast

Nigerian actors Theo Somolu and Folake Olowofoyeku are set to shine in Disney’s upcoming prequel to The Lion King, titled ‘Mufasa,’ which explores the journey of Mufasa to kingship.

Both actors have secured roles in Disney’s prequel to the beloved classic film, The Lion King, entitled Mufasa. Scheduled for release on December 20, 2024, the movie delves into the backstory of Simba’s father.

The casting of Somolu and Olowofoyeku represents a significant moment for Nigerian representation in Hollywood. Details about their characters have yet to be disclosed.

Olowofoyeku brings a wealth of experience to the project, having captivated audiences in various movies and television series, including her role in the popular sitcom Bob Hearts Abishola (2019), as well as films like Death Race 2050 (2017), Female Fight Club (2016), and the epic adventure 10,000 A.D.: The Legend of the Black Pearl (2008).

Similarly, Somolu brings his expertise from previous endeavours, including the children’s TV show Mighty Express (2020) and Baggio: The Divine Ponytail (2021). Renowned director Barry Jenkins, known for his work on Moonlight and If Beale Street Could Talk, leads the project.

Viewers will be transported to a time preceding Simba’s conflicts with his treacherous uncle Scar as they follow Mufasa’s journey. The prequel delves into Mufasa’s formative years, tracing his transformation from a vulnerable cub to a courageous king.

The film will explore the events that led Taka down a dark path and the complexities of their relationship.

According to Disney, “Mufasa: The Lion King enlists Rafiki to relay the legend of Mufasa to young lion cub Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala, with Timon and Pumbaa lending their signature schtick. Told in flashbacks, the story introduces Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost and alone until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka — the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny — their bonds will be tested as they work together to evade a threatening and deadly foe.”

Joining the ensemble cast are Beyoncé, Donald Glover, Blue Ivy Carter, Kelvin Harrison Jr., John Kani, Billy Eichner, Aaron Pierre, and Seth Rogen.
