Nigerian Army Redeploys 206 Generals, Cancels 120 Postings in Recent Shake-Up

The Nigerian Army has sanctioned the posting and redeployment of no less than 975 officers, impacting various ranks, including 206 generals, 64 colonels, 302 lieutenant colonels, 139 majors, and 122 captains. As disclosed in a circular signed by Maj. Gen. E.F. Oyinlola on January 4, 2024, the appointments and redeployments will become effective from today.

Simultaneously, the circular authorizes the amendment and deletion of 120 officers, encompassing six colonels, 26 lieutenant colonels, 33 majors, 26 captains, and 29 lieutenants. The rationale behind these actions, however, remains undisclosed.

Maj. Gen. Oyinlola issued a warning of sanctions against officers who fail to report to their new assignments promptly. He emphasized the responsibility of formation/unit commanders to ensure the timely release and takeover of affected officers. Commanders who neglect to release officers as directed will face appropriate sanctions and will be held accountable for any lapses in directive implementation.

Despite efforts to obtain comments from the Director of Army Public Relations, Maj. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, he could not be reached, and responses to text messages on the matter were pending as of the time of this report.

It is noted that the Army’s previous redeployment occurred in June 2023, with the number of affected officers undisclosed. According to Maj. Gen. Onyema, these changes aim to enhance the service’s operational efficiency.
