The Nigerian box office achieved a milestone in December 2024, grossing over ₦2.8 billion from more than 537,000 tickets sold. This marked the highest monthly revenue since December 2019, showing Nollywood’s growing influence and the resilience of Nigerian cinema.
Topping the charts was Everybody Loves Jenifa, which amassed ₦1.035 billion by its third weekend, contributing ₦250 million in the final weekend alone. Other Nollywood hits like Mufasa and Alakada: Bad & Boujee added ₦267 million and ₦205.3 million, respectively, to the month’s impressive tally.
International titles also performed well, with Sonic 3 earning ₦70.6 million in its debut and Moana 2 grossing ₦358.3 million after five weeks.
Boxing Day was a standout, recording 47,672 tickets sold—the highest post-pandemic single-day total and the third-highest in Nigerian cinema history.
With an average ticket price of ₦5,220, Nollywood’s December dominance reflected increasing local demand for homegrown stories. The industry’s growth aligns with government initiatives, such as the ₦5 billion Creative Fund, which supports Nollywood producers.
Industry projections suggest Nigerian cinema could surpass ₦10 billion in annual revenue, affirming its role as a cornerstone of the nation’s creative economy.
