The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has categorically denied the circulating misinformation that each inmate receives a daily feeding allowance of N200. In a statement released by the Service’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abubakar Umar, the NCoS clarified that the accurate daily feeding allowance for inmates in custodial facilities nationwide is N750.
Describing the media report as false, misleading, and geared towards causing mischief, Mr. Umar emphasised that the feeding allowance for inmates is public information. He explained that the approved amount is transparently disbursed to vendors upon completion of the supply, with the contract for ration supply being publicly available. The conditions for interested vendors to apply are outlined in accordance with the Public Procurement Act 2007.
In his words, “For the avoidance of doubt, the public may wish to note that feeding allowance for inmates in Nigeria is in the public domain, and vendors are paid the approved amount upon completion of supply. The contract for ration supply is usually made public, and the conditions clearly stated for interested vendors to apply in line with the Public Procurement Act 2007.”
Mr. Umar highlighted the existence of a ration committee in each custodial centre, responsible for overseeing the quality assurance of supply, preparation, and distribution to inmates. This committee ensures that inmates are fed within the approved budget.
Furthermore, the statement asserted the commitment of the authorities to improving inmates’ welfare through feeding and empowerment, emphasising ongoing efforts to appeal to the Nigerian Government for an upward review of the feeding allowance to align with current economic realities.
Mr. Umar concluded by urging the public to dismiss the false report and assuring them of the unwavering dedication of the Controller-General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa, to work for the general well-being of individuals in custody. The statement also expressed gratitude for the support of well-meaning Nigerians.
He said, “The authorities have, over the years, demonstrated commitment towards improving inmates’ welfare in terms of feeding as well as empowerment through effective reformation and rehabilitation programmes…It would be unfair and unpatriotic for anyone to fabricate stories just to denigrate the Service.
“The public is advised to disregard the false report and be assured of the irrevocable commitment of the Controller-General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa to work for the general good of persons in custody even as genuine support of well-meaning Nigerians will continue to be appreciated.”
