Nigerian Court Dismisses Request for Extended Detention of Emefiele

Federal Court Dismisses Request for Extended Detention of Nigeria's Suspended Central Bank Governor

In a recent development, the Department of State Services (DSS) had requested an “extended detention order” to hold Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, in custody for an additional 14 days. However, the Federal Capital Territory High Court has ruled against this request.

Emefiele’s troubles began on June 10 when he was apprehended by the secret police shortly after President Bola Tinubu suspended him from his position. After spending over a month in detention, he was brought before the Federal High Court in Lagos where he faced charges related to illegal firearms possession.

During the court proceedings, Emefiele was granted bail. The court ordered that he should be remanded at the Ikoyi facility of the Nigeria Correctional Service until the bail terms are met, providing some respite from his time in custody.
