A Nigerian doctor‘s life has been cut short in an elevator accident just two weeks for her to conclude her housemanship.
According to information obtained by News Central, the terrible occurrence involving the young doctor identified as Vwaere took place at the General Hospital Odan in Lagos Island.
The incident, which has triggered social media reactions, was made known by the deceased’s friend on Twitter.
She alleged that Vwaere was in the elevator when it allegedly fell from the 10th level to the ground floor when she went outside to pick up something from a dispatch rider.
It was also alleged that it took the hospital one hour before the body of the victim was evacuated and rushed to the emergency section before she died.
A staff who also tweeted about the incident said the elevator was known to have had issues, and staff had made complaints about it.
The tweet reads, “Particularly aggrieved because we’ve complained for a long time about this elevator. We’ve manoeuvred, managed, and prayed each time we had to use it. Empty promises will be made to fix it….till it killed one of us.”
The hospital administration and the deceased person’s family have not yet released a comment regarding the death as of the time of the news.
Several Nigerians have taken to the social media app, Twitter, to react to this unfortunate incident with the hashtag #Elevator.
Dr. Chinonso Egemba popularly referred to as ‘Aproko Doctor’ said; “That elevator crash in HSC was completely avoidable! She didn’t need to die for it to be attended to. Other doctors had complained numerous times about the same elevator. I hate how the “anyhow-ness” in Nigeria keeps snatching lives and dreams. It’s frustrating! Damn!”
Another doctor famous for disseminating health content on Twitter with the handle @trending_medic said; “The senior colleagues in management/leadership positions could have stamped their foot down and insisted on that elevator being fixed before work continues but no, they’re all after their pockets, and political positions.”
A Twitter user with the handle @Morris_Monye also said; “People should be punished for the death of that doctor. I’m so sure there was monthly or quarterly maintenance money for that elevator that someone somewhere has misappropriated. It’s such a sad story.”
