Vice President Kashim Shettima has reiterated the federal government’s commitment to partnering with all 36 states in Nigeria to address the ongoing challenges posed by flood and other natural disasters. He highlighted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent approval of N3 billion for each state, a move aimed at ensuring that subnational governments are adequately supported in mitigating the effects of such disasters.
Speaking during a meeting with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, at the presidential villa, Vice President Shettima stressed that the administration’s aim is to foster a sense of inclusion and partnership across the federation.
“It is a national calamity that has befallen us, and it is a concomitant effect of the incestuous relationship among climate change, ecology and the economy. From Bayelsa to Sokoto, there is hardly any part of this nation that has not been affected by these flooding incidences,” he noted.
The Vice President assured that the Tinubu administration remains committed to addressing these issues. Shettima took the opportunity to commend Speaker Abbas for his leadership in the National Assembly, praising him for maintaining stability despite the high number of new members. He emphasised the importance of a strong relationship between the executive, legislative, and judicial arms of government in sustaining democracy in Nigeria.
In his remarks, Speaker Abbas extended his sympathies to the Vice President, President Tinubu, and the people of Borno State over the flood disaster. He assured that the National Assembly would stand by the affected communities and offer necessary support.
He further assured that the legislature would collaborate with the executive branch to ensure that palliatives and relief efforts reach those affected by the disaster, helping them regain their livelihoods.
This united effort between the federal and state governments, alongside the legislative arm, is seen as critical in mitigating the impact of flooding across Nigeria and ensuring a swift recovery for affected communities.
