Nigerian Government Commends Dangote Cement's Role in Economic Diversification

The Nigerian government has expressed commendation for the Dangote Group’s significant contributions to supporting the nation’s economic diversification efforts. The Minister of State for Environment, Dr. Iziaq Salako, conveyed this appreciation during a familiarisation visit to the Dangote Cement Plant in Ibese, Ogun State.

Dr. Salako highlighted that mining is a key sector targeted for economic diversification, aligning with the government’s initiative to reduce dependency on oil and gas. While acknowledging the vast potential of the mining sector, he also emphasised the challenges associated with mining activities.

The minister stressed the importance of sustainable practices in expanding the economy without adversely affecting the environment. The visit aimed to assess the environmental impact of the plant coal mill, and Dr. Salako applauded Dangote’s commitment to job creation, export opportunities, and the promotion of best practices in all its operations.

Dangote Industries, as an international conglomerate, received praise for its dedication to high-tech and automated operations. The Minister urged continuous efforts to promote best practices, conduct thorough environmental and social impact assessments, and ensure stakeholder involvement to safeguard sustainable growth.

Representing the Ogun State governor, the Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, acknowledged the positive impact of Dangote Cement on the state’s revenue through levies and taxes. He called for enhanced collaboration between state agencies and the company, expressing ongoing support from the state.

The Dangote Plant Director, Mr. Azad Nawabuddin, provided insights into the social investments and infrastructural milestones achieved by the plant since its inception. The company’s substantial contributions to infrastructure development and employment in host communities were highlighted.

The Minister’s visit was followed by a community engagement session in preparation for the Expert Panel Review of the Environmental Impact Assessment Report on Coal Milling at the Plant.
