The Nigerian Government, through the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, has directed the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) to investigate the tanker explosion in Jigawa State that claimed over 100 lives.
In a statement issued by the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri, and signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Nneamaka Okafor, on Wednesday, the minister expressed profound sorrow over the tragic incident.
The explosion occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Majiya Town, Taura Local Government Area, after the tanker, en route from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State, lost control near Khadija University. According to police spokesperson Shi’isu Adam, several individuals were attempting to collect spilled petrol from the overturned tanker when it exploded, resulting in a massive loss of life.
The statement read: “Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, Minister of Petroleum Resources, is deeply saddened by the petrol tanker explosion in Majiya Town, Jigawa State, which has claimed over 100 lives and left many injured. On behalf of the Ministry and the Federal Government, we offer our heartfelt condolences to the families affected by this terrible incident. Our prayers are with the injured, and we wish them a swift recovery.”
The minister has instructed the NMDPRA to conduct a thorough investigation into the causes of the explosion.
Lokpobiri also urged the public to avoid approaching vehicles transporting petroleum products that have been involved in accidents or experienced mechanical failures. He stressed that petroleum transporters must ensure that only certified drivers, compliant with Federal Road Safety Corps regulations, are employed to handle the transport of these products.
“While we understand the urge to collect spilled fuel, the risks cannot be overstated. This tragedy serves as a devastating reminder of the dangers involved,” the minister said. “The Ministry is fully committed to ensuring the safety of Nigerians in the transportation and distribution of petroleum products. We will work closely with relevant stakeholders to enforce stricter safety measures and prevent such incidents in the future.”
