In a swift response to the pressing food shortage in the country, the Nigerian government has issued a directive for the immediate release of 102,000 metric tonnes of essential food items.

Speaking at the 3rd meeting of the Special Presidential Committee on Emergency Food Intervention, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, underscored the urgency of the situation.

He stressed the government’s commitment to combating food hoarding and assured that stringent measures would be taken against offenders. Idris emphasised the President’s directive to ensure food availability for Nigerians at reasonable prices, urging the Committee to take decisive action.

Furthermore, the government has instructed the release of 42,000 metric tonnes of maize, millet, and garri from the strategic reserve with immediate effect. This move aims to promptly address the food crisis by providing essential commodities to the populace.

Addressing another facet of the intervention, the Minister announced the securing of a commitment from the Rice Millers Association of Nigeria to supply 60,000 metric tonnes of rice. This allocation is expected to sustain the populace for a considerable period.

Idris highlighted the importance of engaging with rice millers to stabilise food prices in the market. The collaboration aims to alleviate the financial burden on consumers, ensuring accessibility to essential food items.

Additionally, the government is exploring the possibility of importing food to supplement local produce and alleviate immediate shortages. This interim measure is said to demonstrate the government’s proactive approach to addressing the current food crisis.

Looking towards long-term solutions, the minister emphasised the need for partnership between the government and Nigerian farmers. He revealed plans for substantial investment in agriculture to reposition Nigeria as a food-sufficient nation.

Appealing to food traders, Idris urged them to cooperate with the government’s efforts and avoid practices detrimental to consumers. He warned of sanctions against those found exploiting the situation for personal gain.

The minister called for unity and patriotism among Nigerians in facing the challenges ahead. He reassured the populace of the government’s commitment to implementing effective strategies to mitigate the food crisis and ensure food security for all.
