Nigerian Government Raises Alarm Over Surge in Ransomware Attacks

The Nigeria Computer Emergency Response Team (ngCERT) has raised alarm over the increase in ransomware attacks on institutions in Nigeria.
ngCERT, in a recent statement, said Phobos ransomware attackers quickly gain entry into weak networks.

Those at risk include IT and telecom service providers whose clients include government agencies, financial institutions, telecommunications, education, healthcare, service providers and non-governmental organisations in Nigeria.

ngCERT is actively collaborating with vulnerable and affected organisations to swiftly resolve such incidences and prevent further damage, demonstrating their proactive approach.

“It’s essential for organisations to proactively implement the mitigation strategies outlined in this document to help prevent the spread of the malware”, ngCERT stated.
According to a report by the Nigerian Communications Commission(NCC), Nigeria has suffered a staggering loss of $500 million to cybercrime, underscoring the severe financial impact of these attacks.
