Nigerian Government Releases NASU, Retirees’ Settlements

Nigerian Government Releases NASU, Retirees' Settlements

The Nigerian Government has allocated funds to pay the outstanding salaries of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Federal Universities (NASU).

The Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) announced this information in a statement issued in Abuja.

As stated by the OAGF, the Nigerian Government has also provided funds for the disbursement of benefits to retirees under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme Sector (NUPCPS).

The OAGF announced that payments to Non-Academic Staff of Federal Universities have started, and many have confirmed that they have received them.

The office emphasised its dedication to effectively supporting the welfare of Nigerian workers and retirees.

This development follows a nationwide strike by NASU and the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) on Sunday.

As stated by the unions, several issues prompted the industrial action, including inconsistencies in payments associated with the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), failure to pay earned allowances, and the non-payment of the national minimum wage arrears and consequential adjustments.

NASU and SSANU criticised the government for not fulfilling an agreement that was voluntarily entered into with the unions. They also urged Nigerians and stakeholders within the university sector to pressure the government to uphold the agreement to prevent a ‘complete breakdown of industrial harmony in the universities and inter-university centres.’ Nonetheless, the statement from the OAGF did not address payments for members involved in the SSANU strike.
