Nigerian Healthcare Workers Convicted in Wolverhampton for Elderly Patient Abuse

Four Nigerian healthcare professionals have been incarcerated in Wolverhampton, UK, following their filmed physical and emotional abuse of an elderly patient. The victim, an 89-year-old woman with vascular dementia rendering her unable to speak, resided in a Wolverhampton care home.

According to local law enforcement, the health workers were captured on camera engaging in both physical and emotional mistreatment of the elderly patient. It was revealed that the woman’s family had covertly installed a camera, leading to the recording of the abusive incidents.

Ame Tunkara, Morounranti Adefila, Danny Ohen, and Bridget Aideyan were all found guilty and subsequently sentenced at Wolverhampton Crown Court. The family had become concerned after noticing bruising on the woman’s arm following a year in the care home. Additionally, the elderly patient had developed nervousness and a fear of physical contact.

Eight care assistants faced charges, with four being acquitted after a trial. Tunkara, 33, from Walsall, and Adefila, 43, from Wolverhampton, were found guilty of ill-treatment and willful neglect, receiving four months’ imprisonment on December 8. Ohen, 39, and Aideyan, 49, both from Wolverhampton, were convicted of the same offenses, with Ohen sentenced to six months and Aideyan to four months on November 14.

Detective Constable Kathryn Sargent expressed, “This elderly woman sadly died in October and should not have spent any of her remaining years suffering such ill-treatment.”

David Atherton, a journalist with contributions to BBC, ITV, BBC Radio, TalkTV, and GBNews, shared the news on Friday, stating, “Four Nigerian healthcare workers found guilty of abusing an 89-year-old woman with vascular dementia in Wolverhampton.
