Nigeria’s House of Representatives has directed that the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the distribution companies, DISCOs, immediately reverse the tariff hike for Band A customers after adopting a report presented by the House Committee on Power.
During the report’s presentation, the Chairman of the Committee, Victor Nwokolo, emphasised that the new tariff is too burdensome for Nigerians. As a result, the Committee recommended a return to the previous tariff rates.
These recommendations were unanimously adopted by the Committee and subsequently passed. Additionally, the House has decided to conduct further investigations into the proposed tariff hike.
In April, the NERC announced a 231 per cent increase in electricity tariffs for Band A customers, adding that the affected customers can expect at least 20 hours of power supply per day.
It was clarified that only electricity customers in Band A, which constituted only about 15 per cent, would be affected by the increase. Nonetheless, the decision has caused outrage since its announcement.
