Nigerian Lawmakers Slash Salaries by 50% Over Economic Hardship

Members of the House of Representatives have unanimously agreed to reduce their salaries by 50 per cent for six months to support Nigerians facing economic hardship and food insecurity.

This decision came after Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu proposed an amendment to a motion by Rep Isiaka Ayokunle, which initially called for abandoning planned nationwide protests in favour of dialogue with the government.

Kalu’s amendment suggested that lawmakers contribute 50% of their N600,000 monthly salaries to assist the government in addressing the rising cost of food.

The House adopted this motion, which results in a monthly sacrifice of N108 million from the 360 lawmakers over the next six months.

The funds will be used to alleviate the current economic difficulties and food insecurity in the country.
