Nigerian Man Dies During ‘Fortification Ritual’; Police Arrest Native Doctor

NEC Issues Deadline for States to Report on State Police Establishment

The Enugu State Police Command has announced the arrest of one Enuwa Odugu, a native doctor, and Uwakwe Eze for conspiracy and the murder of Uwakwe’s son, Chikwado Celestine Eze.

In a statement by the Command’s spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, it was revealed that Chikwado’s death occurred after his father took him to the native doctor’s shrine for a ritual intended to strengthen him with charms. During the ritual, Chikwado was reportedly placed in a coffin, but tragically, he died during the process. He was rushed to a hospital, where he was confirmed dead by the attending doctor. His body was subsequently deposited in the mortuary for preservation and an autopsy.

The police disclosed that the native doctor confessed to the crime and admitted to performing similar rituals in the past. He claimed that Chikwado’s death resulted from his failure to adhere to specific ritualistic rules previously given to him.

The case is currently under investigation, and the suspects will be charged in court once inquiries are completed, according to the police.

In a related development, the Enugu Police Command also reported the arrest of 24-year-old Okoro Chukwuebuka Kingsley and 18-year-old Ogbonna Samuel Chiedozie for conspiring and murdering 52-year-old Mrs Patience Nkem Charles. The police stated that Kingsley, motivated by a grudge from his time as Mrs Charles’ security guard in 2021, confessed to the crime. The suspects admitted to strangling the victim in her home. They were apprehended through police intelligence and have already been arraigned in court, where they were remanded in the Nigerian Correctional Custodial Centre.
