Nigerian Parliament Rejects President Buhari’s nominee, Onochie As INEC Commissioner (News Central TV)

The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday bowed to pressure from Civil Society groups, the opposition and other Nigerians and declined the confirmation of the Special Assistant on new media to President Muhammadu Buhari, Lauretta Onochie from Delta State as a Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Onochie was rejected following deliberations on the report of the Committee on INEC, chaired by Senator Kabiru Gaya (APC, Kano).

The Senate also stood down the approval of Professor Sani Mohammed Adam till further legislative action.

The panel recommended Onochie’s disqualification as INEC National Commissioner because her nomination is in violation of Section 14 (3) of the 1999 Constitution on the Principle of Federal Character.

The committee said May Agbamuche who is the Chairman, Legal Services, INEC is currently a serving commissioner from Delta state, where Onochie hails from.

The Senate on Tuesday bowed to pressure from Civil Society Organisations, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and other Nigerians and refused to confirm the Special Assistant on new media to President Muhammadu Buhari, Lauretta Onochie from Delta as a Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

In a related developement, President Muhammadu Buhari will tonight host 109 Senators of the National Assembly at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
