Dr. Sulaiman Sadi Ibrahim, a scientist from Nigeria, is the recipient of the coveted Wellcome Trust Career Development Award, valued £969,680.

Because of the full, functional molecular biology laboratory he established in a public institution in northern Nigeria, Ibrahim, a Wellcome Trust fellow from 2017 to 2019, became the first Nigerian to receive the honor.

The funding, which is almost N500 million, will be used to carry out an eight-year project to upgrade Nigeria’s infrastructure and support both undergraduate and graduate students.

Sadi Ibrahim is a native of Getso town in the Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State and teaches at Bayero University Kano.

In a post he made on Centre for Research in Infectious Disease (CRID) website, Ibrahim said of his Ph.D thesis, “My thesis addressed the role and allelic variation of resistance genes, the cytochrome P450s from the major malaria vector An. funestus on insecticides resistance across Africa.”

This scheme provides funding for mid-career researchers from any discipline who have the potential to be international research leaders. They will develop their research capabilities, drive innovative programmes of work and deliver significant shifts in understanding that could improve human life, health and wellbeing.
