A combined team of operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Security Services and the Nigerian Army on Saturday, April 24 stormed the operational base of IPOB Militias in Awomama Village Oru East LGA of Imo State leading to the elimination of Ikonso Commander (leader of the insurgents in the Southeast) and 6 other armed fighters of the insurgent group.
The militia group were reported to be responsible for the attack on the Imo State Police Headquarters and the headquarters of the Nigerian Correctional Service on April, 5, 2021.
On approaching the base, the joint team was attacked however, they returned fire killing 7 IPOB militias, killing their Commander popularly known as Ikonso Commander.
Security sources state that: “The operation is part of deliberate effort by the Police and other security forces to quel the activities of insurgents in Imo State and other States of the South East and South South region of the country ”
Several arms including 6 sophisticated AK-47 rifles, hundreds of ammunition of different caliber and stash of charms were recovered from the insurgents.
It was gathered that 3 Police officers and a Soldier sustained gunshot wounds during the gun battle. They are said to be receiving treatment in an undisclosed Hospital.
Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma disclosed to State House correspondents on Friday that fifty suspects have been arrested in connection with the incessant attacks in Imo state.
Earlier today, suspected militants razed the country home of the Governor in Omuma, Oru-East Local government Area of Imo.
