Nigerian Senate Approves Creation of South West Development Commission

Nigerian Senate Greenlights Formation of North West Development Commission

The Nigerian Senate has passed the South West Development Bill at its third reading, following a report presented by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Special Duties, Kaka Shehu Lawan.

Lawan noted, “If the commission is established through presidential assent, it will, like other development commissions, receive funds from the federation account, as well as donations from development partners, to address infrastructure deficits and ecological issues in the region.”

First read in February 2024, the bill aims to manage funds allocated by the Nigerian Government for capital projects in the South West.

The commission will also oversee the use of these funds for the construction, reconstruction, and rehabilitation of roads, housing, and other infrastructure damaged in the region.

Additionally, it will address ecological and environmental challenges to promote the socioeconomic development of South West states.
