The Senate confirmed President Bola Tinubu‘s appointment of Lt. General Olufemi Oluyede as the substantive Chief of Army Staff.
The confirmation came after a review of a report submitted by Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua (APC, Katsina Central) during plenary. Yar’Adua stated that Oluyede was screened on November 26 as Acting Chief of Army Staff.
The confirmation was unanimous, with all senators present endorsing the appointment during the Committee of the Whole’s deliberations.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio expressed confidence in Oluyede’s ability to address security challenges, including terrorists and bandits.
He also expressed condolences for the passing of former COAS, Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja, and prayed for his continued repose.
Tinubu had requested the Senate’s confirmation of Oluyede’s appointment last week, citing constitutional provisions under Section 218 (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Section 18 (1) of the Armed Forces Act.
Tinubu hailed Oluyede, in his letter to the Senate President, as a seasoned officer known for his great leadership, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to national security and unity.
The President initially named Oluyede as Acting Chief of Army Staff on October 30, following the illness and eventual death of his predecessor, Lagbaja.
