The Nigerian Senate has cancelled clause 87 of the electoral act amendment bill which provides for a compulsory direct primary poll for all political parties in the country.
The change was made to the legislation after Abdullahi Yahaya, Senate leader, sponsored a motion in the upper legislative chamber on Wednesday.
President Muhammadu Buhari had declined assent to the draft law passed in 2020 over the provision of direct primaries as the sole mode of conducting political parties’ primaries.
It states that: “a political party seeking to nominate candidates for elections under this bill shall hold direct primaries for aspirants to all elective positions, which shall be monitored by the Commission (INEC).”
