The Senate established an investigating committee to look into the recent demolitions in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) after requesting an investigation on Thursday.
Nyesom Wike, the FCT Minister, will also be invited by the committee to address it and provide an explanation for the demolitions, which have left many inhabitants without a place to live.
Senator Ireti Kingibe of the FCT Senatorial District made the motion, which called for an urgent halt to more demolitions and voiced alarm over the unlawful demolition of buildings in the nation’s capital.
An investigation committee was established by the Senate to investigate the demolitions and provide a report to it within a certain amount of time.
The Managing Director of Julius Berger Nigeria PLC was also called before the upper chamber due to the company’s noncompliance with requests to furnish information regarding the Odukpani-Itu Highway project.
The states of Akwa Ibom and Cross River are home to the Odukpani-Itu Highway. It serves as a vital conduit for trade and transportation in the south-south area, connecting the towns of Itu in Akwa Ibom State and Odukpani in Cross River State.
Despite receiving significant public monies totalling more than N18 billion, Julius Berger has disregarded and failed to honour invitations to submit information about their role in the project, according to a resolution presented by Senator Osita Ngwu.
Julius Berger and other organisations’ reluctance to accept legitimate invitations has been denounced by the Senate as contempt of the National Assembly and a violation of constitutional authority.
In addition, the Senate has used its constitutional authority to obtain an arrest warrant to force Julius Berger’s managing director to appear at the rescheduled investigation hearing.
