Nigerian senate pass police trust fund bill

The Nigerian Senate, on Tuesday, passed the Nigerian Police Trust Fund bill
(HB 894). The Nigerian Senate president, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki had promised that work on the bill would be fast-tracked, along with the Police Reform bill.

Saraki said the bill is a big stride towards providing and improving security and policing in Nigeria.

“The performance of the Nigeria Police is key to our nation’s security. This is because apart from us ensuring that the institution is well-funded, we need to ensure that the Police plays its Constitutional role in the security of our nation”.

“I am confident that by the time we lay the report on the Police Reform Bill, we would have gone a long way in moving the police in the right direction” Saraki added.

The Police Reform Bill is currently under consideration by the Senate. Both bills would go help move the police in the right direction”. They would address the issues of funding and institutional reform of the Police. Hopefully, these would bring an end to many of the unfortunate incidents involving police officers across the country.
