Supplementary Budget: Nigerian Senate to Hold Emergency Session

Nigerian Senate to Convene Over N6.6tn Supplementary Budget

The Nigerian Senate will hold an urgent session to review President Bola Tinubu’s supplementary budget proposal for the 2024 fiscal year.

Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs (APC, Ekiti South), announced this in a statement on Wednesday.

He added that Thursday’s plenary will also address pending bills, motions, constitutional and electoral matters.

“We hope to deal with issues concerning our further oversight on the appropriations and clear further the hanging issues of constitutional and electoral concerns. And clear outstanding bills and motions, expectedly before our annual recess, later in the year.”

The Senate spokesperson previously indicated that the supplementary budget amounts to N6.6 trillion.

The House of Representatives and the Senate began their recess last week and are scheduled to reconvene on July 2, 2024.

The emergency session and supplementary appropriation come amidst speculation about acquiring a new presidential aircraft. There have been suggestions that the cost of these aircraft might be included in the supplementary budget.

However, on Tuesday, Senate President Godswill Akpabio dismissed reports that the Senate had approved funds for new presidential jets.

Earlier, the House of Representatives Committee on National Security and Intelligence had proposed to buy a new aircraft for the President and Vice-President.

President Tinubu signed Nigeria’s 2024 budget of 28.7 trillion into law in January this year.
