Nigeria’s telecommunication regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has increased the total number of mobile phones permitted for sale in Nigeria to 1,891.

The devices, which are of various brands and models, were tested and approved by the commission as having fulfilled the appropriate type of approval requirements required to be marketed to Nigerian consumers.

As of April of this year, there were 1,843 phones approved by the NCC. This means that 48 new phone models were approved in the last six months.

As of September 2022, there were more than 200 million active mobile subscriptions in Nigeria. This makes it a real market for mobile makers around the world. Reports say that Chinese mobile manufacturers continue to have the most allowed devices in the country’s mobile market. With nearly 300 phone models certified, Tecno led the pack.

Speaking on the NCC’s efforts to guarantee that all phones in the country are type-approved, Prof Umar Danbatta, Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, recently urged Nigerians not to acquire any phone that has not been authorised for the market by the regulator.
