Vice President Kashim Shettima has expressed confidence that Nigeria would overcome its current challenges, addressing attendees at the 2nd Chronicle Roundtable organised by 21st Century Media Services in Abuja.
During the event held at Ladi Kwali Hall, Abuja Continental Hotel, Shettima emphasised the need for patience as the administration navigates the economic turbulence inherited upon assuming office.
He assured Nigerians that positive changes would soon manifest across various economic indicators, including inflation, per capita income, GDP, poverty reduction, and food security.
Shettima, serving as the guest speaker, outlined key policy decisions and the economic and social agenda implemented by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. Notably, he discussed the removal of petroleum subsidies, describing it as a crucial step towards economic stability.
While acknowledging the challenges faced, Shettima mentioned the administration’s commitment to addressing them through innovative initiatives in various sectors, including oil and gas, creative arts, steel, solid minerals, housing, the blue economy, and the digital sector.
Regarding the contentious issue of fuel subsidy removal, Shettima clarified that the decision was made to avert an impending economic crisis caused by unsustainable debt servicing ratios. He emphasised the need for collective sacrifice and patience to overcome these challenges.
The Vice President also highlighted efforts to combat economic sabotage and currency manipulation, acknowledging the interventions of key figures such as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and the National Security Adviser.
The event’s chairman, Dr. Shamsudeen Usman, lauded the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu administration, emphasising the importance of policy consistency and long-term vision in driving economic transformation.
Attendees included the Minister of Information, the Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, and prominent leaders in the media industry, reflecting the significance of the event in fostering dialogue and engagement on critical national issues.
