The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued a strong warning to Nigerian youths regarding the dangers of engaging in illicit drug use, emphasising the severe health risks and broader societal impacts of drug abuse.
Dr. Jamila Ibrahim, Minister of Youth Development, delivered the warning in Ado-Ekiti at the conclusion of a two-day sensitisation programme focused on combating drug and substance abuse among young people in the southern region of Nigeria. Represented by Alhaji Alu Mohammed, a Director in the ministry, Ibrahim highlighted the government’s determination to address the drug abuse crisis.
Mohammed explained that the initiative aimed to provide accurate information about drugs, including health risks and evidence-based prevention strategies. He noted that drug and substance abuse remains a significant challenge for young people, with increasing numbers falling victim to these issues. Research has shown a rise in both the demand for and supply of illicit substances.
The Minister pointed out that drug abuse is often influenced by various social factors, such as peer pressure and negative influences, and assured that these issues would be addressed.
He urged state governments and relevant stakeholders to support the Federal Government’s efforts in tackling the drug abuse crisis. Adeola Adebayo, Ekiti State Commissioner for Youth Development, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for selecting Ekiti as the venue for the southern zone’s awareness campaign.
