Nigerians have been reacting following the federal government‘s alleged plans to ban the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

According to reports, the FG is considering banning ASUU for failing to end a protracted strike after the academic union rejected various proposals.

On social media, some Nigerians criticised the idea as hasty and urged the Federal Government to reconsider.

Others claimed it was an inappropriate course of action that might worsen the nation’s current problems.

A Twitter user “@iniioluwaa saidIf FG bans ASUU, what’s the assurance that CONUA will not also go on strike?”

Another user @Abskilz1 said the proscription “won’t do any good. It’s from frying pan to fire… Govt hv been forced thus far to oblige to ASUU demand. They should just pay their backlogs already. It’s the students who will lose. Eventually after these time waste, they’ll still will pay them. Proscription?? Nahh.”

Meanwhile, after a brief meeting with the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, in Abuja on Saturday, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Allied and Education Institutions (NASU) decided to call off their strikes. The suspension is anticipated to begin on Wednesday.

The Federal Government has allocated N50 billion, according to the minister of education, to pay earned allowances for members of SSANU, NASU, and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
