Dr. Emomotimi Agama, the newly appointed Acting Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), has assumed office pending confirmation by the Senate of Nigeria’s National Assembly.

Agama, who officially resumed at the Commission’s head office on Tuesday, pledged to ensure effective regulation and development of the capital market to enhance the nation’s economy.

In his address, he stated, “I have come here today to serve you and the institution by sheer providence. We should work together to meet the yearnings and aspirations of the capital market, let us make this institution better and greater, knowing that it is a place that feeds and gives us succour; united we stand, and divided we fall.”

Expressing gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for the opportunity, Agama acknowledged the weight of expectations from the market and the nation. He emphasised the collective determination of the incoming management to fulfil their mandate, collaborating closely with the Commission’s staff.

Agama also praised the commitment of the Commission’s staff and assured that the new management would address any lingering staff issues in collaboration with the staff union. “I have come here as your colleague because, without you, this institution won’t get anywhere. This institution has been built by you; your resilience, even in trying times, has brought us thus far. All of you have been symbols of hard work”.

Reflecting on his longstanding association with the Commission, Agama highlighted the collective journey and expressed appreciation for the contributions of every staff member. “It’s been a wonderful journey knowing every one of us here. I have had the pleasure of being involved in people’s careers here for the last 20 years. We have crossed many rivers, but each of us has added some value to this institution. When we leave, we should be able to look back with joy at what we have done. I therefore solicit your support and cooperation to ensure that we all succeed.”

In response, the staff members pledged their dedication to supporting the Director General in realising the ambitious objectives of enhancing the Nigerian capital market. President Tinubu recently approved the appointment of a new board for the SEC, comprising Mr. Mairiga Aliyu Katuka as chairman, Frana Chukwuogor and Mr. Bola Ajomale as executive commissioners, alongside other non-executive commissioners.
