Nigeria’s Burna Boy, Wizkid Bring Home The Grammys

It was a historic night in Los Angeles, United States as Burna Boy and Wizkid bag Grammy Awards in different categories.

Burna Boy’s “Twice As Tall” won the Best Global Music Album while Wizkid won an award for his role in the video of Beyoncé’s “Brown Skin Girl” off her Lion King: The Gift Album.

The feat achieved by the musicians, especially Burna Boy’s has been celebrated by many Africans including top musicians and political bigwigs in Nigeria.

Twice As Tall, which is Burna Boy’s second nomination was selected over Antibalas’ FU Chronicles, Bebel Gilberto’s Agora, Anoushka Shankar’s Love Letters and Malian band, Tinariwen’s Amadjar. Recall that Burna Boy lost last year to legendary Beninoise musician, Angelique Kidjo.

By his feat, Burna Boy has joined a very esteemed list of African winners of the Grammy Award. He thanked everyone who supported his craft and gave a message of hope to every African child.

“You can achieve whatever you want to, wherever you come from,” he said. “Look at me, a Grammy Award-winning Burna Boy.”

He also performed his “Level Up” single at the award ceremony.

Chika Oranika and a Nigerian-American Grammy Noninee announced Burna’s name as the winner of the award.

Other Nigerians who won on the night by contribution are; Tiwa Savage, Femi Kuti and his son, Made Kuti for their roles in Coldplay’s “Everyday Life”. The Album won the Album of the Year award. They will be handed Grammy certificates for their respective roles in the award-winning album. It is Femi Kuti’s closest call with a Grammy award after five nominations.
